Expert Diagnosis and Ongoing Management of Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

Pulmonary embolism (PE) — a blood clot in the lungs — is a potentially serious condition that requires prompt, expert assessment and careful long-term management. In my private respiratory practice, I provide rapid evaluation, evidence-based treatment, and personalised follow-up for patients with suspected or confirmed PE.

When to Suspect a Pulmonary Embolism

Symptoms of PE can vary widely and may include:

  • Sudden breathlessness.
  • Chest pain (often worse on breathing in).
  • Cough, sometimes with blood-streaked sputum.
  • Unexplained low oxygen levels or rapid heart rate.
  • Leg swelling or tenderness (from a deep vein thrombosis, or DVT)

If you’ve experienced these symptoms — or have already been diagnosed with a PE — it’s important to receive expert care to guide your recovery and prevent recurrence.

Rapid and Accurate Assessment

I offer urgent appointments with access to same-day or next-day investigations, including:

  • D-dimer testing and blood work.
  • CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA).
  • Leg vein Doppler ultrasound (to identify associated DVT).
  • ECG and echocardiogram, where needed, to assess heart strain.

I work closely with radiology, cardiology and haematology colleagues to ensure a fast, accurate diagnosis and get you started on the correct treatment.

Personalised Treatment and Follow-Up

Once a PE is confirmed, I develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual risk profile, underlying cause, and lifestyle. This may include:

  • Anticoagulation (blood thinning) therapy, prescribed and monitored carefully.
  • Evaluation for underlying causes, such as inherited clotting disorders, immobility, or cancer.
  • Follow-up imaging, if required (usually not required), to assess clot resolution and lung recovery.
  • Risk stratification to determine how long treatment is needed — from 6 months to lifelong in some cases.
  • Return-to-work and travel advice, especially for those with active lifestyles or upcoming surgery.

I also assess whether additional investigations (such as a thrombophilia screen or cancer screening) are appropriate, depending on your medical history.

Trusted Care, When It Matters Most
